The third page in the application is not a must, but a can. It is a completely voluntary add-on document. As the applicant, you decide for yourself whether you want to add a third page to your application or simply leave it out.

In fact, letters of motivation, short profile and third party usually mean the same thing. It is ONE application page, which can be freely designed and briefly and precisely brings the qualifications, motivation and goals of the applicant closer to the HR manager. She is an appetizer. Good for applicants: You have to adhere to far less formal requirements than in the résumé or cover letter. It is up to you whether you label the third page with bullet points or write it as running text. The name suggests: If you decide on a third page, then this belongs in the third position of your application documents. Only a cover letter and curriculum vitae come before that, followed by job references. And don’t forget to mention the third page in the cover letter under Attachments. page 3 summarizes your application in a compact form. It provides the recipient with an overview of your qualifications, skills, experience and motivation. The following elements belong in the short profile :

  • sender including name, address, telephone, e-mail
  • heading
  • Introduction (short!)
  • Main part including qualifications, experience, soft skills, motivation
  • Final wording
  • Place, date, signature (handwritten)

The introduction consists of three to four sentences with which you as the applicant convince the HR manager of your motivation. Then list qualifications and skills. Please take another look at our sample above. Why do I need contact details? If the HR manager only reads the third page, he will find all the information he needs to contact you here. But please do not write pages 3 or 3. Page in the heading. That looks like written off. Instead, formulate a meaningful headline that encourages reading if possible. For example:

You see: you can turn the third page in the application in a very special direction – depending on which heading you have chosen. Pick a focus that will shape the page. Everything else is already in the résumé. It is of course a good idea to focus on something other than the one in your cover letter. So you can cover several areas that are important to you or the company. At this point, please note: If you find it difficult to work something out, then page three should be left out from the start …

Third-page Application: Advantages

Yes, many advisors consider the third page in the application for ballast and completely superfluous. In fact, the more reading material there is in the application, the less likely the HR manager will read everything. He just flies over. He gets the essential information anyway from the résumé, the cover letter and the certificates. But this is exactly where the argument FOR the third side lies. Because assuming the recipient has no time or does not want to take it, then a convincing page 3 can be exactly the right bait for him. Motto: “Aha, how practical, I’ll read it through now, then I can save myself the rest. Exactly what I need right now. ”And when the third party is completely convincing, it can heave its sender into the next round. In this scenario, it would not be additional ballast, but an alternative to the rest of the documents in your application. That makes things so difficult at the same time. You must not forget any essential information, but you must condense page 3 to the bare essentials. And you should avoid pure duplications and repetitions because it is quite possible that the HR manager will read everything through after all. If he then sees an almost identical cover letter and page 3, he could doubt your ability to prioritize. So very important: keep it short! No novels, no long stories and debauchery. It has to be a few short sentences – preferably 10 to 15 lines long. And the third page should allow something new, a different perspective, or even entertainment. Third page: yes or no?

  • you need space for information that was no longer available in the cover letter.
  • it fits the advertised position.
  • it serves to give your CV continuity.

There are also counter-arguments. You DO NOT need page three if …

  • it just consists of repetitions.
  • You are sure that your application is already round and complete.
  • You know or suspect that the recipient will react critically to this.

On the third page of your application, you do not have to limit yourself to the qualifications or core competencies. You can also highlight specific skills that you consider particularly relevant. These can also be skills beyond the mainstream. It is important in any case: Page three must offer the recipient added value. Remember: you want to use it to persuade you, to advertise yourself and your skills. The third page in the application is not an end in itself, but an instrument to achieve your goals.

Third page: Profession and Industry

The advantage of the third page in the application: It leaves a lot of room for creativity. Freedom is only available to a very limited extent in your resume and cover letter. For example, a software developer could design a third page that looks like source code (and thus simultaneously demonstrates his coding skills). A cook drafts a menu card, a medic drafts a recipe, a controller drafts a balance sheet, an engineer drafts a blueprint, and a social media manager drafts a Twitter timeline. But these are only suggestions. You can of course conjure up a completely different style and your own ideas out of your hat. Note: You can, but mind you don’t HAVE to get creative. If the overview suffers from your effusions, the recipient will hardly be happy about it.
